GEMSTONE GUIDE

INCLUSIONS - All natural stones whether it’s a diamond or coloured gemstone will possess internal and external features called clarity characteristics. Inclusions specifically relate to internal features of any given stone. These are often small markings or particles and crystals that become trapped or form naturally within the stone’s crystal as it grows.
Certain types of inclusions can only be found in certain types of stones, or they may be particular to stones mined from a specific part of the world. Some inclusions reach the surface of the stone and can therefore be seen more visibly than others. They are like the fingerprints of the stone, evidence of their natural origin. Gemologists use them as a way to identify stones and distinguish real stones from synthetic or fake ones.
Generally, the clearer a stone is the more valuable it is, but this is only measured in monetary value. In certain types of stones, inclusions can add value to the stone, because they become part of the unique look of the stone. Stones with one of a kind inclusions that create desirable patterns or effects in the stone can be incredibly rare in the sense that you will never be able to find another one like it, so this needs to be considered as well.
Different people value different things in life, and this is the same with stones. Some will prioritise size over colour and clarity, others may prefer a more uniquely coloured or included stone over a clear one that looks more common.
A lab report or certificate will record what a stone is on paper, but at the end of the day it is just a piece of paper and you’re not going to be wearing that piece of paper. We believe it’s important to have a strong emotive connection with the stone you choose. Only you can decide what is most appealing in a stone.
